As a lawyer specialized in maritime law, Gabriela Vidal is one of the founders of the Uruguayan branch of Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association International (WISTA), a network that globally connects more than 3,500 professional women in the maritime sector. As vice president of WISTA Uruguay, she was responsible for the organisation’s adherence to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs).

“Although I personally did not face specific challenges due to gender, even working in a predominantly male environment, I know the enormous importance of fighting for more equity in business – helping to promote equality and the empowerment of women”, says Gabriela.

For her, there is an obligation to share the spirit of the WEPs and put its guidelines into practice with all business partners – as well as to share the lessons learned through the network. “As a WEPs company, we have access to a global network of knowledge, to specific materials from UN Women, which encourage us to continue to do more towards the commitment we made”, says Gabriela. “It is due to this commitment that we share what we know with partner companies in the sector, highlighting the importance of working with these good practices both at a professional and personal level.”
